Accessibility is not only a necessity, but in certain cases a requirement - https://nda.ie/accessibility/european-accessibility-act I am not fully sure if Caint requires following the EAA, but I would prefer to have Accessibility options available, not to comply with any laws… because we will eventually have users that would require them. Now, as this is currently a 1-man-band, it may not be possible to implement everything right away, but it is something that can be worked on. As noted previously, there are various different looks to Caint, that may be more suitable for certain users. See https://caint.ie/topic/11/change-the-look-of-caint for more info. AltText for uploaded images are already here. Once the site is more established, and rules are going to be eventually drawn up, I will ensure that AltText becomes a requirement. Whenever you upload an image, you will see the following text: ![Screenshot_20250714_124132.png](/assets/uploads/files/1752493338920-screenshot_20250714_124132.png) After the file extension (png) and before the closing bracket ()), you can add AltText, by typing "This is AltText" So that it looks like this: ![Screenshot_20250714_124132.png](/assets/uploads/files/1752493338920-screenshot_20250714_124132.png "A screenshot of Caint with the option to select different themes.") If there is anything else that should be adjusted to improve accessibility, please reply and let me know.

By default, there is a light theme applied to the website. If you prefer a dark mode, or add a splash of colour, you can change the colour scheme. On the bottom left of the screen, you will see a paintbrush , click it and choose a look. The icon will pulsate letting you know it is being applied, and the page will refresh with the new look. If you have any questions, feedback or suggestions, please let me know! [image: 1752935561965-screenshot_20250719_153218.png]

It’s always good practice to look after the security of your accounts, even for discussion forums like Caint. To enable it, go to the following Click your profile picture/icon on the top right >> Click your username Select “Two-Factor Authentication” at the bottom. If you lose your 2FA device (hardware token, mobile phone) and you cannot recover it, please email caint@caint.ie from the email address that is associated with your account and the 2FA can be removed. If you have any issues, please let me know.

Welcome to Caint. What? Caint is a new discussion board for Irish people to talk about Ireland and the world. Non-Irish can of course join and take part. Caint is the Irish word for talk or speech. As this is a forum, where we ‘talk’ to each other. Who? Caint is operated by me, myself and I. Why? Caint was set up as a response to the potential shutdown of an older, but popular forum, Boards.ie. I like forums and the Fediverse, so setting up a NodeBB website was a no-brainer. Where? This website is hosted in Germany, but operated out of Ireland. When? The site started as a new project under the old name ‘39’ but changed to 'Caint; in July 2025. How? This is being run out of pocket for a small amount. Check the finances thread for more info. Questions? Comments? @Comments-Feedback

Today I have the distinct honor of representing @Mastodon as we are acknowledged by the Digital Public Goods Alliance during the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies's Open Source Week. This news comes at a time when it has never been more imperative for public institutions to communicate directly with their constituents. Rarely in history have we trusted the truth and trusted each other less than we do today. Mastodon provides the infrastructure for organizations to maintain sovereignty over their digital presence, and empowers them to reach out to citizens without algorithmic barriers or paid promotion. Recognition of Mastodon as a digital public good validates our commitment to building transparent, ethical technology that serves people over profit. Because truly, our values drive everything we do. We believe that true digital freedom comes from the ability of communities to connect, learn, and play together, while preserving each community's right to self-determination.This recognition belongs to our entire community: every instance admin, developer, and fedizen who believes in building a more human-centered internet. Together, we're showing the world that social media can be transparent, ethical, and community-driven. We're proud to be part of a movement that puts people first and proves that genuine connections flourish when communities have the freedom to govern themselves.Thank you #Mastodon #Fediverse #SocialWeb #UnitedNations #DigitalPublicGood #OpenSource

This will probably not be popular for people here, but I still found it interesting to see other apps including Lemmy Website of the app dev: https://codelux.org/

Interesting read outlining different approaches to federation that could be more nuanced than allow everything/approve selectively.
