I was reminded of an old laptop (an HP 620) of mine, which had an added dedicated button for Bluetooth and Wifi. It cycled through on/off stages for both in #Windows and was tied to it possibly though BIOS, but I'm not sure.I was a #Linux user at the time. Oh the fun!I had to keep dual boot Windows on it, because if for any reason the wifi was turned off at the BIOS level (I'm assuming), I had to boot to Windows, cycle with the button to have both turned on and then force power down (I think with software shutdown didn't work, but might've been my impatience as well). Now both BT and WLAN would work normally on Linux.I really dislike non-standard solutions like that, but also topical stuff like specific streaming platform buttons in remotes or keyboard keys for a specific AI service, which obviously are not re-bindable and thusly useless at one point or another.

One of the things I love about Linux is the the upgrades are UPGRADES. The developers seem like they're focused on *fixing* things instead of finding ways to entrap me in their software. It took me until today to realize I hadn't experienced that with Windows or OSX in *decades*. New versions usually takes things away, move buttons around, and install spyware.#FOSS #FLOSS #OpenSource #Linux

One thing that has really surprised me about my move to Linux over the last year or so, is that there is not a single usable open source code editor for web development. I can't stand VScode, because it is a clunky bloated piece of crap, and so many others just copy it for some reason. A few others looked promising, but are just too unstable and lacks development, or even look abandoned. For the last few months, I have been trying to use ZED, as it seems to get hyped up, but it is absolutely awful, even if you ignore the AI functionality. It kept messing with my code, despite trying to tell it not too, and it's syntax highlighting is so bad, that three quarters of the page is often just one colour. Then there is all these popups appearing in font of the code I'm trying to write. I've ended up having to again just go back to Sublime Text, which unfortunately is propriety. But now I can see my code again, ZED has broken it by stripping out some closing tags and adding white space where I don't want it. That means I have zero interest in Zedless either, which is going to be the upstream code with the AI and telementary stripped out. I'm not one for usually grumbling about open source apps, as I understand it is people's own time, but I had expected a good open source IDE for Linux to be easy to find.#linux #ide #codeeditor #opensource #webdevelopment

Hey everyone! I'm back on Mastodon, reviving one of my three instances. This time, I set it up on a powerful VPS with Docker: 20Gbit bandwidth, unlimited S3 storage in Switzerland, BunnyCDN for global reach, DNS anycast for domains, and CEPH storage for my volume. Running it on my favorite Debian 13 Trixie, just released! The installer feels like a nostalgic trip back to Debian 4 Etch. @LorenzoAncora @lispi314 or maybe that they are lazy and want to use some fancy JS "framework" instead of writing proper HTML? I'm not a web developer myself but for most websites I could imagine HTML versions that do the job just as well. Maybe they don't look as fancy but I personally don't care about that.
