I was just checking our PeerTube. I searched for "John Brown's Body", and did find a video of the Pete Seeger rendition.PeerTube is the equivalent to YouTube on the Fediverse. Some years ago I decided to move away from proprietary social media options due to concerns about their increasing tracking and monetarisation of their platforms. So, I set up accounts in Diaspora, Friendica, Lemmy, and Mastodon. Diaspora was okay, but not much was happening there. I quite liked Friendica, but then the instance I was on suddenly pulled the plug. I liked Lemmy, but, unlike Reddit, there was no way to post videos.I like taking news videos and getting relevant unedited segments from them (interviews with left leaning politicians in Canada often aren't highlighted and, thus, can't be found elsewhere). So I thought PeerTube would be the answer. However, most of the instance servers baulked at the idea of posting an unedited clip from the news, feeling it's a grave copyright infringement. News is shocking, whereas if I made asinine videos (like, of me eating marbles or something), that would be okay.However, I did find one instance that would allow it, stating I could claim "fair use". But, usually after posting I'd have to wait a week for the moderators to approve it. And that instance lately is warning users that money constraints may have lead to its shutdown.It's too bad. @theraccoonbytes @mapache @samnabi a large part of the point I'm trying to make is that we can do this within borders, with a commitment to local hosting and local support, but with access to the global base of fediverse software and collaborative reach globally.But my vision for "verification" is more like the financial industry's "KYC" - an identifyable org and/or certified professional vouches for someone by an auditable process. Badgefed + Fediprofile seems a great digital schema for it

If I go for Apple at some point, I won’t be able to just wrap the site and call it a day. I’d need to build out more native functionality, and I’m not going to pretend I fully understand that path yet haha.

The latest episode of the Europeans podcast (@europeanspodcast@mastodon.social) features a really nice interview with Eugen Rochko (aka “Europe’s anti-Elon”) where he goes into his thoughts about Mastodon, the Fediverse, and his own position in all of it. It’s a really interesting discussion, and an excellent example of how one can talk to people about the Fediverse without making it sound incredibly intimidating. The interview starts around 0:40:50.

I actually woke up this morning planning to work on fediverse integration issues since comments and boosts weren’t going through, so this is very timely. Thanks for sharing it. @spacebuffer We took over an instance with about 600 Mau. We started with 10gb and quickly doubled it to 20gb as we were getting out of memory errors. Database and system are about 500gb of disk. Media cache is about 1TB hosted off site. I think we're around 10 cpu cores.

@douwe@waag.social The protocol itself hasn’t changed radically in the last 18 months. If you want to understand ActivityPub and ATProto’s similarities and differences, you can’t find a better analysis than Christine’s. She is one of my co-authors on ActivityPub, and she really dug deep into both protocols.
