“The Government of Canada could easily decide that it was going to use LinkedIn or Instagram or wherever it posts, and journalists would switch to following them there because they want to access what they’re saying,” he continued. “There was zero audience for Truth Social when

Trump created and started using it, but the audience went to the politician. Carney and his government could take a principled position by leaving X and its horrible spawn, Grok, and his audience of journalists and politicos would go with them.”

“Apparently, our political leaders simply choose not to.”

As always a huge thank you for the Senator's @Paulatics ongoing activism. It WILL happen. (and by it I mean, government going to the social web... Bluesky is just a temporary blip until it too goes fascist or we get some proper digital sovereignty laws in place.)

@chris I just made similar comments under her post. :)

Like: bare minimum leave the nazi bar for officially communicating with the public.

And: if you want to be a world leader during the descent into fascism, choose free and open tech.

        @chris @Paulatics

The government of Canada could run its own Mastodon server. Then they'd have complete control over their posting policies, etc.

        Any government could do this.

Even most businesses could do this.

Nobody has to subject themselves to the monopolists.

@JeffGrigg @chris @Paulatics A government server would not only have control over posting policies, but more importantly, autenticating users prior to account creation so someone posting from that server would have official status and not impersonating an officioal

Each business and government could have their own official Mastodon server. And yes, official reliable verification of identity and that those people really do speak officially for the organization would be a huge benefit.

(And they could have a private, secret, internal one too, for internal communications. If they want.)

It's obvious and easy. And it's clearly not very expensive. Hard to argue against it.

But, of course, (in my experience) …

Hardly any governments will do this.

Because there's no highly commissioned sales staff to sell it to them.

              It's not backed by a big-donor company.
(Smelling like an "impossible to prove" bribery-like thing.)

              😢
