What its exact function is, I couldn't tell you, as I haven't studied the die that thoroughly and let's face it, I'm no @kenshirriff
If I had to hazard a guess, it looks like an 8-bit memory, perhaps part of the prefetch or instruction queue. No real idea though.
In any case, it's pretty.

You can't see it at this resolution, but they're actually an array of tiny 80286s, so you can do recursive programming. It's '286s all the way down. -
