https://thenib.com/pay-your-respects/@continuation The difference is that Charlie Kirk was a person who we disagree with - not a person who was controlling the levers of violence. He had every much a right to his free speech that we do.

@garlandkey @continuation Charlie Kirk used his free speech to promote the kind of thing that happened to him. Sow the wind and all that. He was sowing it when he was shot.

Two things can be true: 1. Charlie Kirk didn't debate his ideas as part of a democratic society, he promoted violent fascist ideology that would end democracy, take away people's rights, and kill people. 2. Charlie Kirk, like every human, had the right to live and not be shot.
He dedicated his life and career to creating a violent society based on the idea you can oppress, lock up, and kill people if they aren't like you. And he died in that world he helped build.

@continuation @garlandkey to which, this corollary: 3. Free speech has consequences.

How did fascists take over the USA?Like this.
Time and time again, we are told that we must show empathy for monsters, but never for their victims.
Whether it was the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of families shattered by health exec Brian Thompson, or the countless people in marginalized groups tormented by Charlie Kirk, it is always the same refrain.
