Carbon storage is BS. Reduce production of the damn stuff to begin with. It’s a scam driven by large corporations who have everything to gain from it.

@dmacphee Yes! The energy requirements to capture GHG at source are ridiculous. The paper linked below estimates 58% of total energy generated will be used to capture, process, and sequester the CO2 generated.
And as for the sucking carbon out of the air…that’s what forests are for.

@adamvs1 @dmacphee don’t disagree that it’s mostly greenwashing for carbon emitters at this point, BUT…

We already see renewables sometimes overproducing in some markets. If we install as much as we should, managing the excess energy becomes a problem. If we had carbon capture plants that could spin up when renewable electricity becomes essentially free, we could actually gain some ground on climate change.

Wish we could count on forests, but they’re burning. Canada’s forests were net carbon emitters in 2023, and 2025 isn’t looking good. Mother Nature might need a helping hand on this one.

@famousringo @dmacphee Can’t disagree. 8 Billion industrialized mammals are going to damage the ecology, no matter what we do. But I’m leery of any additional tech (with attendant pressure for profits) solving problems caused by technology. And I know that requires nuance, as you illustrated!

@dmacphee @famousringo On the other hand, protecting and expanding forests(not simply tree farms) would be more effective, and cheaper.
Carbon Capture & Storage tech requires similar amounts of energy as what put the carbon there in the first place.
