February is the Black History Month here in the US, and a great opportunity to recommit to making the fediverse (and beyond!) a safe and welcoming place for Black people.

Let's continue to lift up their voices, celebrate their joys, and if you see trouble, step in and help out.

And for the "I don't see racism" and "At least it's better here than on Twitter/X" crowd, Mekka has some great threads on this. Highly recommend browsing/following!

@BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to @Are0h@ubiqueros.com If you take one thing from my little thread here it's this: Black people don't leave the fediverse because of openly racist people. Just like Black people don't leave Boston or San Francisco because of the openly racist people. There are openly racist people everywhere.🤷🏿‍♂️ Black people leave the fediverse, Boston, and San Francisco, because of the behavior of the supposed "non-racist" people. The combination of extreme racism, and denial of its existence, is too much.

Q: Elon rate limited future President Kamala Harris' campaign account? He can do that and so much worse! He can mess with the visibility of her posts! Why is she using Twitter anyway? Why isn't she using Mastodon? A: Remember how she had a Zoom call for Black women and 40,000 people joined? Q: Yeah? What's your point? A: Those women were on Twitter. Q: But why are those Black women on Twitter? Why aren't they here on Mastodon? It would be better for me if they were here! A: *deep sigh* 1/N

@Jorsh@beige.party As I've said before: * At peak, 20% of Twitter daily active users were Black. * The Nazi experience is *worse* on the Fediverse than Twitter. Much worse. It's not even close. Many Fediverse users want people to "stop using Twitter," more than they want to make Fediverse "welcoming to all people." People are still on Twitter not because of Elon, or their own personal failings. They're still there (for now) because of our failure to create a better Fedi. Yes, so far I've failed too. 🤷🏿‍♂️
