I don't know about other filmmakers or content creators, but I have never seen a dime from YouTube. Even when I pushed out regular content filming live events, even when I had huge numbers of followers and views, the only thing I ever got from YouTube was a bunch of nasty comments.
But unless they use ad-block, every person watching my videos sees ads they don't want for things they don't want. Google is making bank off my work, and I just want people to see it.
If you're like me, consider switching to a reputable #PeerTube instance that federates like @BTFree or @MakerTube

@darkwolf @BTFree @MakerTube I had been on YouTube for 15 years. They run like gambling houses, only paying out to attract more gamblers while most of it goes to the house.

@darkwolf ive looked a few times at Peer Tube and cant find any instance that would host my videos. They have such a narrow range of what theyβll accept that when I search for options, the only english speaking one is I think it was called lone.earth and it is for nature but I often also post dog videos and kpop and climbing and such, and they say they moderate and will get rid of non nature videos. I did try to apply anyway, but then got an auto notice they werenβt accepting new folk even though there is a green check that says accepting, so I guess they didnt want me for some reason.
So. Theres literally no option for me that I can find. Thus. Stuck with YT. Im not joining 5 different instances to be able to share videos i wanna share with friends.
Ive used their search for instance feature multiple times and this is always what pops up as my only option and its not really an option for me.

@Myotis_cuniculus @darkwolf perhaps if you add a peer tube tag to your post someone may recommend a general purpose instance that you could sign up for? Good luck!

@darkwolf I'll qualify this by saying I don't know your video niche or numbers but just saw this video from a creator I follow who just monetized last year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdAlCyn8iew

This is what I love so much about the fediverse and PeerTube. Videos take up a lot of data and bandwidth, but we're able to support each other to keep it up and running without the need to compete. There's no need to bad-talk anyone, just support each other in this.
I'm pretty tech-minded, so I figured out how to get a storage server for $25/year, a domain name for $10/year, setup yunohost and install PeerTube. There is the option of self-hosting. It's not the easiest thing, but there is that option.
So, I thank you for providing the infrastructure, helping others get going, and inviting an inclusive host!

I'm not a film maker, but an educator. I used to run a YouTube channel for graphic design tutorials. (I said 'used to', as I do not intend to get back to YouTube). And I can say that I share your grievances with YouTube. I have recorded more that 200 video tutorials (including shorts). They are making big bucks out of it, meanwhile keeping hoping that one day, I will reap the fruits of my labor. 1/3 -

The majority of YouTubers do not reap any fruits of their labor, that's the sad reality of it. And I agree with you that PeerTube is the way, even though it is not currently not monetized. It is still in its infancy stage, but I believe that as it grows, it will eventually allow creators to earn a living from their labor. Personally, I am on the TilVID instance, which is focused on educational content. 2/3 -

Excellent point! My professional work will be here: megaultra@makertube.net
And my personal work will be here: darkwolf@tubefree.org
I'm in the process of migrating right now

@Myotis_cuniculus I'm sorry to hear that! I have a fear of rejection, so I can relate. I just this week setup tube.mega.us and cannot make any guarantees about stability at all. But it's a storage sever with some space. I'd host you or anyone as long as the content doesn't promote hate.

WOW! And they need the high rollers to show that yes YOU TOO can make it β¦ it's 100% gambling. Yes, you can hedge your bet by gambling long enough or have a trick, but it's still a gamble.

@darkwolf@hear-me.social THANK YOU!
I'm here to help anyone else set up theirs. Matrix has a growing community for ActivityPub folks. Peertube included. Let's all grow and work together. If I don't know an answer, I know a place we can find it!
