I’ll start with the first one that happened to me:

“One spring day – I was running along the path through a lovely forested section, really struggling to keep my pace up, and felt quite defeated. Then this young university student comes around the bend, sees me and gives me a big double-thumbs-up with a grin. I waved back and managed to run for another thirty minutes before slowing to a walk.”

@WTL It was the early days of the pandemic, and my neighbour invited me to run with her on a trail nearby

I really struggled to run even 100m, despite being a long distance cyclist.

She kept encouraging me along the way and never let me give up. Kept telling me I was doing great whenever I tried to put myself down. When we got back home, I tried to say “this is not for me” and she said “you did such a great job, when are we going to do this again?”

It made me feel like I could do it, and I started a C25K plan.

She’s not my neighbour anymore, and now I run casual 5ks every other day 🥰

          @WTL
          So many...
My ex-colleague, a seriously good runner, who always makes a point of running with me when he's in town.
All those marshalls at races or parkrun who offer a word of encouragement.
Tons of fellow runners who will have a chat during a run, a quick wave or a thumbs up.

@WTL I’m my early days of running circa 2018 I connected gradually with a great running tribe on Tw*tter, before it went down the pan and I found you Mastonauts.
Several runners, particularly a local guy named Jon, shared their knowledge of distance running willingly and encouraged me to do daft things like ultramarathons. Without them, and the support of my wife, I wouldn’t be here - literally on the eve of another marathon tomorrow - having completed so many crazy races🤘🏻👏🏼

@WTL the fine folks here in #running spring to mind in many ways.

I had been trying to resume running after a few years away, having stopped back then because of repeated hamstring injuries. I struggled… no plan & stubborn expectations. The people here were so supportive, offered guidance & tips, and soon I was wholly back.

Later, inspired by others here, I began increasing distances. Soon I ran my first 10k & 2 years ago, a HM.

                Now, as I’m struggling… same supportive group.❤️

I want to highlight the profound positive impact of the running community on this platform. I didn't know I missed it before I found it - but now I cannot imagine doing my hobby without you all. You have, literally, made my life better. Thank you!!

In "real-life", I travel a lot and always bring my running shoes. Meeting and greeting local runners in other cities and countries, often just with a nod or a thumbs-up, has made me feel more welcome everywhere; my "tribe" was already there.

@WTL never liked running, only saw road/city runners and they always looked miserable. After more hiking and watching Beau Miles on YouTube for some reason I started to run in 2024. I tend to run in remote places but when I do meet other runners I get a smile and a wave. Yesterday I got to a gate first and held it open, the 30sec chat with the couple running the other way was very nice and friendly. Don't run for PB, pace or splits. I run for time spent outside. And on here I don't feel pressured to do otherwise.

@sebastianhahn @WTL I’ve lived in SW Virginia for 20 years. But because I didn’t grow up here, some regional expressions and colloquialisms really pop out and I catalogue them like an anthropologist might.

The one I really adore, is that they don’t say, “I appreciate it”. Instead they say, “I appreciate you” or, really “appreciate ya”.

I love it for being more personal and less transactional.

This is a long winded preamble to say… appreciate ya! ❤️
