THIS JUST IN: #Canada's government is going ahead with Alto, a high-speed rail line between #Quebec City and #Toronto
-
-
Yesterday Alto was on list of 10 infrastructure projects to be fast-tracked by new Major Projects Office; consortium already selected, contract is signed.
This is one of few projects that will reduce emissionsβit replaces cars on Highway 401 and short-hop flights w/ fast, frequent electric trains.

A lot of up-sides. Canadian-made steel would go into the tracks; Aluminum would go into railcars. Both industries are suffering thanks to Trump's tariffs.
It would also help Canada meet climate commitments, and provide employment in Ontario, in areas hard-hit by car plant closures.

@straphanger there hasnβt been Canadian made rails in decades. All comes from USA. If they insist on Canadian made trains , we will never see high speed trains here. No expertise, no existing assembly lines for high soeed trains and no Canadian suppliers of parts/components. If the goal is to provide train service instead of political photo ops, then you buy proven trains from existing assembly line in Eurooe, Japan or China.

@straphanger the map is interesting. First it puts a station in Montreal which wonβt happen due to rem. Second , it puts Laval only on Montreal-Ottawa route. Trois-RiviΓ¨res tracks going west terminate at st Martin (Laval) where they connect to lines ti at-Jerome, Lachute and towards iskand if Montreal. mobtreal. So both Quebec-Laval and Laval ottawa pass by Laval.
