I support Mastodon not because it's perfect, but because it has the right to exist. The Fediverse represents something we almost lost: the idea that social networking can be a protocol, not a product.
We've been conditioned to think that "social media" means a single company's timeline, moderated by their trust and safety team, monetized by their ad algorithms. Mastodon breaks that paradigm. It's messy, it's fragmented, it's harder to search—but it's ours.
