#PSA #FediTips reminder to the #Fediverse that you can #block certain topics from your timeline, so they're either behind a warning or don't show up at all. This is is great if you have an account where you don't want to engage with distressing subjects: I have another account with several hashtags blocked as "politics".

If your instance runs a #Mastodon interface, you can find this in the "Preferences" screen, under the "Filters" tab.

My main recommendation is that everyone who isn't doing #moderation do this with #FediBlock, but people who follow that hashtag may also want to block other things.

The Fediverse is built to be friendly and healthy, not to upset you: we don't need to drive "engagement" metrics for investors here. Use the tools provided to improve your experience.

#PSA #FediTips continued, this is also the reason why #moderation doesn't like when you change the spelling of words to try and get around detection. We aren't censoring legitimate discourse here, so you can say words like "death" or "sex" without some algorithm stopping you: all you're doing with "unalived" and "s*x" is making filters and searches by other users less effective.

Also, Hashtags are great. Use them so people around the #Fediverse can tell the system they want to see what you're saying. They're a great way to spread messages, including this one!

Don't use algorithm-friendly euphemisms, don't hold back on hashtags. Just talk freely!

@Raccoon also on the censoring keywords thing, most of the reasons why that also was done on other platforms was because of the instant full text search, that the second you'd maybe post something mentioning a keyword, you could very well have a torrent of harassment in replies/quoting.. and your only way around that was to censor those keywords out.

Luckily the searching isn't that quick on here with federation and you can also opt out of being in search & indexing, so censoring isn't needed.
