  • I've replaced my Linux Mint with KDE Neon.
    Dávid BárdosD Dávid Bárdos

This was one of the best system installation experiences I've had. In less than two hours, I had everything working as it did under Mint the day before, including my Python and Angular development projects, cloud sync, and Steam. Impressive! 🤩

🛠️ I haven't gotten rid of Firefox yet. Steam's .deb installation vanished after using it once, so I replaced it with a Flatpak. The lock screen crashes, and 'apt update' lists two unreachable sources, so there are things for me to fix. I wouldn't say that Neon works out of the box, but it's still really cool.

The whole system feels great, including the smart clipboard, the emoji keyboard and so on.

🐌 On the other hand, it launches apps slower than Mint. Perhaps it is because of #Wayland , but on my config, there should be 0 performance issues. Wating 4 seconds to open a file manager, and 7 seconds for a package manager feels odd. 😅 They should be there instantly. On Mint, GIMP launched under ~1.5 seconds, now it took 5-7. It's not optimal.

But for now, I'm enjoying KDE Neon. Let's see if I can solve all the issues. 🙂 👍

Yesterday I took a wrong approach solving this. My idea was that the KDE installation was perfect, but some inherited config from my home folder caused the issue.

Today morning I approached it differently. I tried to install libpulse0. But it was installed already. Then I forced the reinstallation, and suddenly everything started working.

So, it was badly installed all along.

    My issues so far:

1.) In order to preserve my home folder, I had to use trial and error to determine which partition types, formats, and sizes KDE Neon requires. Reading #StackOverflow only made things worse, as the articles were too old. The only thing that was clearly said by the installer, that it needs 300 MB boot/efi. Now, that I learned the layout, it will be easy next time.

2.) This libpulse0 mess that rendered many basic app unusable.

3.) I haven't figured out how to uninstall #Firefox yet. I use #Vivaldi and I don't need an AI infused browser. I like Firefox too. But if it is not removable as any other app, then I consider it bloatware.

I've replaced my Linux Mint with KDE Neon. Worst installation experience since Windows Vista. 😅

It is a lifesaver that I can jump back to the comand line as no KDE apps work including Konsole. A missing libpulse shared library causes the problem, but reinstalling pulseaudio didn't fix it.

I have no idea why a missing audio lib blocks a terminal emulator, a file manager, or a notepad (Kate) from launching. 🫤

I'm certain that Neon work fine at the end, but now, it's annoying.
