  • The STM is closing the Jeanne-Mance exit at Place-des-Arts 🟢 underground station for an undetermined period of time.

@EdwinG Phase 1 refers to the project to redo the waterproof membrane over roof of station. There have been many many project over the years.

Here is an example: when they covered the space over the tracks on the orange line level to prevent suicides, it caused a huge change in ventilation when a metro came in so they had to dig new ventilation shafts. One of them is a new access from the BAnQ "pit" on the SE corner of building where you see trees come out form a level below ground. There is also an entrance from metro to BanQ done at same time,

@EdwinG With regards to "when will the work be done at Berri", probably "never" because by the time they have budgets to deal with issue A, issue B will arise.

But the inside ofstation renovations are close to complete (there is work between core and Place Dupuis right now). Have not gone to the yellow line platforms to see progress of elevator work there.

@EdwinG On clsing it all to do quick job: thsi was done in 1963-1966 for the building of the station but city of Montréal would never allow that anymore due to all the traffic disruption, expecially as Ste Catherine is no longer a trhough street that was 2 way lijle it was back then.

@EdwinG As you walk from the core to the St-Denis exit, this is the concrete that is over your head. They managed to pour a new thin layer before laying the waterproof coatings.

BTW, this was STM work that was not in the City of Montréal map of street closures which reflect only city of montréal work 🙂 Going forward, Montréal will incorporate the closures of Berri and Maisonneuve portions for each sub phase.

@EdwinG After the problems with Phase 1 taking longer than predicted, STM put the rest on hold , specially with funding cuts happening. They recently announced agreement with city of Montréal for combined works for phase 2 (which itself was broken in in multiple separate closures).

Phase 1 was broken onto mul;tiple pieces due to the probvlems of all the wiring/piping. They first dug the south side (eastbound lanes) in 2022, and on 2023 dud the north side. And then they worked further west from st-denis to the edge.

@EdwinG Berri Uqam station rebuild has been a massive effort that was mostly transparent because they just did it bits by bits to not disrupt usability of station. It was not only cosmetic, but lost of structural stuff, as well as electric and HVAC (yes, it has HVAC system for the shops and offices inside the station). Hence you now see chilled water pipes exposed on platforms. They also installed elevators with the last step completing elevators to the platforms on yellow line.

@EdwinG The section of the exit above ground was totally rebuilt with the MAC.

The original exit, still under construction. Was low/light structure. I think the concrete "fence" between sidewalk and station didn't last long. I dont recall it existing. but recal the simple édicule. There was a similar one under what is now a large UQAM building on the north east side. (opposite corridor to Place des Arts/Complexe desjardins.

@EdwinG The urgency with which the métro entrance was closed points to some structural problems in foundations below this relatively new "édicule" that dates from construction of the Musée d'arts Contemporains. Wth STM budgets drained, they likely have no money to do this and there is less urgency due to many exist at that station.

@chad Side trip from Sydney is the Fortress of Louisbourg National park. Restaurantion inside buildings is extremely well done as are the interpretion/explanation of the functiosn of the fortress. Good part of history of Canada that the english side of Canada never learns at school.

@chad On your way to Sydney to catch ferry to NFLD, you can do clockwise tour of Cape Breton Highlands national park (aka Cabot trail).

On the way down to Sydney, you can stop at the Alexander Graham Bell museum (he invented something older generations used , called "the telephone".)

@chad off peak, a normal bedroom gives you access to the Park car in the back. During peak, only Prestige has access to Park. (With some exceptions for short periods). You used to be able to take train to Sydney and transfer to ferry to NFLD there. (Took that train in 1984 from Sydney to Halifax).

@Milnoc Cet edicule à la station "Chatelet" de la ligne de métro 4 est une reproduction faite en 2000 d'un édicule qui existait à Gare de Lyon. I'l n'en reste que 3 de ce design.
