    #Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting #Brazil #coup
    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8xrqxk9p4xo

    Can somebody explain to me if this also means that the judicature in Brasil works (differently) in comparison to the #USA? πŸ€”

    There are so many similarities between the coup in Brasil and in #Washington from my perspective:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6_United_States_Capitol_attack
    10 people died directly or indirectly

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Brazilian_coup_plot
    0 people died

    Both coups occupied the most important symbols of the #democracy in their countries.

    Has the US really lost its ability to prosecute and convict persons who might have committed the most severe crimes against the foundations of their country? 😲

      @publicvoit

      Not a lawyer so I'm reproducing some of the news that I read. What I think is that US did not loose the ability but the will to prosecute and is letting all run free...

      Some differences in Brazil:
      1. In Brazil free speech right is not above other rights. So you cannot disguise your hate vitriol as "free speech"
      2. This is a bit of controversy - Brazilian judiciary opened an investigations on fake news without being provoked by the Attorney general office (procuradoria geral)

        @peaoPerdido @publicvoit 3. Brazilians also have experienced the loss of democracy and long dictatorships in the past, so the system sees this as a serious, actual threat, something that has happened before and can happen again. People my age were born during the last one, so they either want it back because they’re the bad guys and need to be stopped, like Bolsonaro, or they are the ones doing the stopping because we remember how it was.

        You guys have no clue how it is. The threat doesn’t feel real.
