Update 16th September 2025:
This thread will now serve as a public changelog for whenever I make changes and where necessary, provide explanation. The first 7 posts here are merged posts from several different topics.

If you would like certain forums/categories to be created, or if you wish to help out with the site. Please register and drop me a ‘Chat’ on here

I am happy to announce the creation of the ‘Regional’ forums. @regional
This will allow for localised topics.
It is broken down into provinces and then counties.

From the home page of https://caint.ie, you can click directly to a province, and then click into a county.
If you click on “Regional”, you can see a full list of provinces and counties.

I was thinking about introducing a Politics section, but I know that moderation of it is going to be a big issue.

There will be a ruleset put in place to ensure that we won’t encounter issues (Real talk: There will be issues, it is inevitable, but we’ll address them as they come up)

This is just a note that the email address for website communications has been updated from nodebb@mg.39.ie to caint@mg.caint.ie

Please whitelist the email address if password resets or notifications go into your Spam/Junk folder.

Moderation is key to keeping a community website such as Caint running smoothly and effectively.
There are rules in place, of course. (See https://caint.ie/post/23) but that alone is sometimes not enough.

So, for now, I have decided to restrict the @politics section for all new members.
But if you wish to have access and post in the @politics section, you must now join a group.

To join the group, click the icon on the left. Click the “Politics” group, and click the green “Join Group” button.

Existing members are already part of this group, no action is required, but you can leave if you want.

If you are having issues trying to join, please check out this handy GIF explainer from the new @Caint.ie-Mule [Not a real mule]

We know that discussions can be heated, so hopefully by allowing you to join/leave the @politics section, it will help keep things calm.

We’re always looking for ways to improve things here at Caint, so please let us know in @Comments-Feedback

Added a new @external section. This will be for external discussion boards (ie. Lemmy, Piefed, nodeBB, Discourse, etc) - These will only be for topical discussions. External memes and politics discussion boards will still be placed as sub-forums of @caint

Added “Selfhosted” sub-forum linking to selfhosted@lemmy.world in @external
Moved “Fediverse” (fediverse@piefed.social) from @technology to @external [This ensures that Fediverse discussions that are coming in via hashtag and the Piefed feed are separated]

Increased image upload permission size from 100kb to 5MB.

Removed ‘Uncategorized’ from home page. You can still access it by clicking on the
icon on the left side. This has been reverted as access to certain ‘Remote’ categories were missing.
Categories within @caint and @external have been updated to include the source location name.

Registration has changed from ‘Open’ to ‘Admin Approval’ - This means that when you register, you will see this message. You will need to wait for me to approve registration. I will try to catch it within a couple of hours, but if I don’t, ping me on @padraig@mastodon.ie or email caint@caint.ie from the email account that you have signed up from.

Cross posting is now available to everyone (as part of the newest NodeBB update). Go into any thread, and click “Cross post Topic” and select where it should be cross posted to. Example below.
Fixed emoji on posts. And the ability to create emoji’s by typing :star: has also been fixed.
The ability to ‘Spoiler’ text has been removed as it was broken. It may return in the future.

Cross post Example:

In @music, you will see the Video Game Music thread.

In the thread, click Crosspost Topic on the right

Here, you would select the category that you wish to cross post to.
Select the topic and click Cross-post

And the post is now crossed over to the Gaming section.

At the moment, there is no ‘permissions’ for this, so this will be monitored until permissions become available.

@caint is now only accessible by joining the ‘The Lock-In’ Group. Details on how to access the group is the same method on how to join @politics - See here for more details. - All existing members have access to this, you are free to leave the group if you desire.

‘Uncategorized’ category has finally been removed after 5 months of pain… It is still available on the sidebar by clicking the icon on the sidebar or by going to https://caint.ie/world
[Temporary] - The ‘Recent Posts’ that were at the top of the forum were broken after the latest update. I am awaiting an update. Once it has been released, it will be reinstated!

Added @only-in-ireland - For Ireland/Irish-based jokes, memes, videos and more.
Added @gaa , @rugby and @soccer-football categories within @sport
Added @introductions - So now you can introduce yourself to Caint.
All categories (excluding @caint) now has the Irish name beside it.
@caint is now accessible to all. No groups.
@external now contains all @caint remote categories.
Updated descriptions of all categories.
The ‘Recent Posts’ at the top of the forum have been re-introduced. The issue was due to another plugin (that is no longer being maintained and wasn’t actively used) causing issues. It has been removed.

Added ‘Mastodon’ share button.

Hover over any post to reveal the post options, click the ⋮ icon.
Click the Mastodon logo under ‘Share this post’

It will take you to share.joinmastodon.org where you can enter your own instance so that it will load the post on your own server, where you can interact (Favourite, Boost, Reply) with it

Fixed Auto imported posts lacking original images

[Addition from NodeBB v4.10.0 update] AltText will now be published to the Fediverse.
[Addition from NodeBB v4.10.0 update] /world has received some updated. They will be noted below:

The /world page got a makeover in v4.9.0, showcasing a more timeline-based feel. It more accurately represents the breadth of content available on the open social web, such as microblogging, in addition to long-form text (blogs), media-focused items, and everything in between.

We focused on UX updates to this page:

New sorts are available: You can now view just local content, as well as all known content.

The default sort continues to be “your followers”, but also includes local content now as well, because you are also tracking those categories!

Guests were barred from /world in v4.9.0, but this is now opened up again. Their view of the /world page shows only local posts.

The /world page can now be set as a default home page.

Duplicate items were showing up when scrolling down /world (especially on very active timelines)

Uploaded images were showing up in the thumbnail/card headers, even if they were embedded in the post itself. The header is now restricted to topic thumbnails (and post attachments, which only occur with remote posts)

Posts are now height-restricted, so long posts don’t take up an inordinate amount of space. A “show more” button is available to expand posts in-timeline.

The “quick create” editor at the top of this page now also lets you choose a category to post to. Administrators can update the default value as desired. It defaults to World/Uncategorized.
