    My problem with Signal is that it's under U.S. jurisdiction. The development, the non-profit, and the business — all of it is American. The servers that your messages pass through are also located entirely within the United States.

    We currently have a fascist regime that is demanding corporations and organizations comply with their outrageous demands. Under our current legal system, you can be ordered to comply and prohibited from warning or informing anyone.

    Those are just the facts.

    I’ve been working on a list of digital services and products that operate outside U.S. jurisdiction. On that list, I’ve included a category for “Encrypted Messages” (alternatives to WhatsApp and Signal).

    Try Codeberg — it's Git, but based in Germany (Europe), without all of Microsoft's nonsense. They're also on the Fediverse: @Codeberg.

    But wait — it gets better!

    Codeberg is open source, and you can even host your own instance. The software is called Forgejo, built by the same folks behind Codeberg, and they're on the Fediverse too: @forgejo.

    @justme @nubo_coop

    That's even worse, because now I can't sync devices — and the last time I tried manually importing and exporting, it turned into a mess where some had current data and others didn't. And I had to keep track of every device.

    I wish people would listen -- NOT self-hosted.

    I don't want anything on my hardware, nor do I want to manage a remote VPS either.

    Sign up, login, done. That is what I seek.

    I don’t store my passwords and authentication codes within the same app or ecosystem.

    The old phrase, “You don’t want to keep all your eggs in one basket,” applies here.

    That said, I still haven’t found a suitable alternative to Ente Auth.

    It must not be self-hosted, and it must not be based in the United States. I need a solution that syncs across multiple devices automatically — without any manual effort or involvement.
