Man, I got in this huge, flashy debate with people on the left and the right on Bluesky last night...Look, here's the deal.@svelmoe Yes. And people also need to recognize (and internalize) that *every vote* matters.
It's easy to show starting from a reductio ad absurdum position: if everyone except one person believes that, and therefore does not vote, then the *one* person who votes decides the outcome. With each additional person's vote, the impact of any one vote (extremist or reasonable) becomes smaller, but it never becomes zero.
Not voting is voting for "whatever".

It took HIV/AIDS *and* COVID-19, but we look to be getting our own Australian Centre for Disease Control@PeterLG ACDC? That's electric.

@thadah Again, I'm not familiar with the specifics; but to me, it certainly *sounds* like a "since not", and like a moderator overstepping the bounds of what the rules are meant to cover.@thadah Again, I'm not familiar with the specifics; but to me, it certainly *sounds* like a "since not", and like a moderator overstepping the bounds of what the rules are meant to cover. (If not, that's probably even worse.) But that's *exactly why* a *different* moderator should always be the one handling an appeal, and the moderator who took the initial action should let the other moderator(s) handle the appeal without undue influence, interference or meddling.

@thadah @lukas Another thing that strikes me about the screenshots: *the moderator who took the initial action should not be involved in handling the appeal*.@thadah @lukas Another thing that strikes me about the screenshots: *the moderator who took the initial action should not be involved in handling the appeal*. At all. (Possible exception: private discussion between moderators to shed light on why the initial action was taken.) Regardless of the merits or facts of the case; and without being familiar with the specifics of Ubuntu's diversity/inclusivity policies or code of conduct, I personally don't see why this sort of edit would be called for.

Okay, some really bad news but also a suggestion for a way forwardIf you are a #MastoAdmin, you may want to purge a.gup.pe from your server.
In Mastodon, go into administration > Moderation > Federation > Add new domain block. Create one for the domain name "gup.pe" (subdomains are included) with "suspend" severity. Once added, go into the details for the newly added block and you'll find the "Purge" button right at the bottom of the page.

I hate it when I talk about AI "art" and how awful it is, and people respond with "Oh, but it will get so much better at it!@lettosprey @TarkabarkaHolgy It's also, conveniently enough, generally not presented as a a falsifiable claim. AI bros (not all of whom are male…) can always claim that the improvements will come at some unspecified later date, and conveniently neglect to specify any sort of measurable criteria for what constitutes "better".
If it isn't falsifiable, then it's meaningless as a statement of current or future fact. It can still have value, but not as any of those.

🧵1/ What can you achieve after buying the Comprehensive Guide to iOS and Mac Security?@silent Either what you say in this thread about the content of the book is representative, or you're overselling it. If you're overselling it here, why should one trust what's in it? If this is representative, then the book is clearly exaggerating because there is no such thing as "unbreakable" anything. (Harder to break? Yes. Secure enough? Sure. But unbreakable? Big fat no.)

One of my favorite authors is about to write her first fairy-tale retelling, joining the many, many authors who do that@Firlefanz One legitimate use for it that I can see is storytelling and writing practice. It's probably more motivating than comparing adverbs or whatever the cool kids do all day these days.
But from there to publishing…

Where else in the world except at a #furry con can you hear "I think I'm going to become a cat" in passing.@KellicTiger Fair
but I didn't say everyone would think the specific species was the best idea.
As long as they didn't choose cat because there's this one rat or mouse they don't like…

Where else in the world except at a #furry con can you hear "I think I'm going to become a cat" in passing.@KellicTiger …and instead of horrified looks and people slowly backing away, you are more likely to see encouragement?

I have these intermittent lines showing up at the bottom of my screen.@miona Graphical display artefact, two different systems, unrelated to the OS since it's also showing in the BIOS screen.
Had it been just the same system I would have said it just *might* be the graphics card, but since both the PC and the Playstation shows the same kind of artefact, my guess would definitely be the monitor being somehow bad. There's a lot of stuff in between the computer and actual displayed pixels.
If it's still within the warranty period, RMA and return for a replacement.

can i ask you all a question@mynameistillian This is not to say that you must decide on everything before you write anything. Quite the contrary! I do want to illustrate how having *some* idea of some of the basics will likely help you answer the questions you posed at the start of the thread. Otherwise, at best, you're likely to just end up with furry humans largely identical to the humans you're familiar with, with maybe some exaggerated trait; not unlike Star Trek but with people having fur and muzzles.
-
can i ask you all a question@mynameistillian There is also, of course, the question of "what if there are multiple, *different*, intelligent species?". That's going to have an impact on both culture and society. How are members of other species treated by members of any particular species? Do some species fill particular niches, or are they all equally likely to be found everywhere? Are there aspects of society off-limits to or exclusive to any particular species? …
And all of this before we even get to available tech.
-
can i ask you all a question@mynameistillian Sure, but the bigger question is what they are like. Sprinkle even just human-like intelligence on top, and culture is going to look *very* different between family-group-/pack-living carnivores and herbivores that assembled in huge groups/herds. And humans also have a biological ancestry which impacts our culture likely to a not-insignificant degree. Take something like humans but evolved from foxes instead of apes; society would likely look quite different!
