as a dev I get it, people always say “just make it an option!” to every little thing but then they aren’t the ones who have to code, write tests, document, and do QA on the quintillions of permutations of options and keep maintaining them as new issues appear with certain combinations and even if everything goes perfectly you still have a super cluttered list of options and then no one uses any of them because it’s too much to read through them all

Gonna volunteer our instance on behalf of our instance operator without their input or consent. Neondystopia.world is an instance for internet adjacent communities with a strong emphasis on privacy and freedom of expression. The instance has been configured to allow the use of Tor and I2P while connecting to ensure the anonymity of our users. Can any instance operators offer an explanation as to why federating with Mastodon from an instance not running their software tends to be more difficult?I've noticed lately that when viewing a profile from a Mastodon instance, their post history tends to be incomplete or otherwise missing. Any posts that are made recently tend to have a significant delay or don't show up on their profile at all.I know that you can view the content from the remote instance in question for a complete profile, that you need to do so however does seem to be a failing on the part of the server software to properly federate and populate posts.#SelfHosting, #FediAdmin, #Mastodon, #MastoAdmin, #ServerAdmin, #SocialMedia, #AskFedi, #FediMeta, #Fedi, #Federation, #Fediverse.

These are posts from Fediverse servers that my instance knows about. 99.9999999999999% of the people posting in "other servers" are not followed by anyone on my self-hosted instance.

Also should have used a lossless compression algorithm like .png, as opposed to .jpg I feel so old realizing I’ve been saying this same thing for 20 years now

@Raccoon also on the censoring keywords thing, most of the reasons why that also was done on other platforms was because of the instant full text search, that the second you'd maybe post something mentioning a keyword, you could very well have a torrent of harassment in replies/quoting.. and your only way around that was to censor those keywords out.Luckily the searching isn't that quick on here with federation and you can also opt out of being in search & indexing, so censoring isn't needed.

30% of the Fediverse disappearing sounds more “survivable” from a network resiliency POV than say, if Bluesky PDS (controlling maybe 99%+?) went down.
